Homecoming Win for Sault High

The Sault High Varsity Football Team came out on top with a win over Alpena, closing out a week of Homecoming festivities. The first quarter saw both teams moving the ball quite a bit, but neither one making it into the end zone. In the beginning of the second quarter, Cale Bell put the Blue Devils on the board first running the ball across the goal line. The two point conversion attempt was no good, making the score Sault 6; Alpena 0. Alpena countered, scoring their own touchdown and an unsuccessful two point conversion attempt made for a tied game. Bell then ran 67 yards for his second touchdown of the game, putting the score back in the Blue Devils’ favor. The two point conversion attempt did not pan out, making the score Blue Devils 12; Wildcats 6 at the end of the first half.

The halftime show brought out the Sault High Marching Band, playing a medley of songs, including an impressive drum solo by Isaac Brindley. Their routine ended with the Sault High fight song. The Homecoming Court and their escorts were announced, and Cody Russo and Emma Kitzmiller were crowned as the 2024 King and Queen. After a week of various competitions including hallway decorations, Spirit Week dress up days, lunchtime competitions, float building and a food drive, the Sophomore class was announced as the overall winners for Homecoming week.

The Blue Devils hit the field for the third quarter and Bell put the Sault on the scoreboard again, running the ball for another touchdown. The two point conversion was no good, making the score 18-6. In the fourth quarter, Caleb Klier had a 4 yard touchdown run, after putting in a number of yards to get his team down to the end zone. Kicker Nick Wood sent the ball right through the uprights, making the score Sault 25; Alpena 6. Bell followed with 25 yd run for his fourth and final touchdown of the game. The PAT attempt was blocked and the score was 31-6. Alpena scored once more, and their two point conversion attempt was no good. The final score was Blue Devils 31; Wildcats 12.

On offense, the rushing leaders were Bell with 24 carries for 252 yards and four touchdowns. Klier had 21 carries for 122 yards and one touchdown. Defensive leaders for the game were Bell with 7 tackles and 1 pass defense, Mason Dufresne with 3 tackles and one quarterback sack, Wyatt Peabody with 3 tackles and 1 pass defense, and Evan Kennedy with 2 tackles and 1 interception.
