The Sault Area Middle School and High School Cross Country teams hosted their annual Elks Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Hosting a number of runners from across the Upper Peninsula and Northern Lower Michigan, the Sault Teams all finished in first or second place.
The middle school runners were first up, and the boys’ team won with 19 points, followed by St Francis de Sales with 49 and St Ignace with 65. Carson Clements (11:57.72) crossed the finish line first with Drew Burtt (12:06.68) behind him in second place. Mace Kavanaugh (13:29.46) was sixth and David Hollister (13:58.87) was eighth. Chase Halvorsen (14:21.91), Spencer Jones (15:27.4) and Collin Bunker (15:28.98) contributed to the team’s first place finish.
The middle school girls won their competition with 38 points. North Trails came in second with 53, and Munising was third with 60 points. Cora Goulet (13:01.10) finished first (13:01.10), Araleah Campbell (14:03.17) was third and Alexa Schwartz (15:09.04) placed ninth. Anna Klozotsky (16:03.52), Talia Klozotsky (16:14.87), Allie Goulet (17:02.29), and Olivia Nyboer (17:53.25) rounded out the girls’ roster.
The boys’ varsity won their event with 20 points, with North Trails in second with 44 and Gladstone placed third with 72 points. Six Sault runners finished in the top ten places. Gabe Litzner (16:03.43) won the varsity race, Evan Huyck (18:08.99) was fourth, Eli Hills (18:14.77) was fifth, Shea Armstrong (18:17.76) finished sixth, Daniel Bowerman (18:30.60) was eighth, and Adam Brandt (18:35.96) was tenth. Chase Aldridge (19:06.08) was also part of the winning team.
The Lady Blue Devils Varsity squad (76) came in second behind South Lyon (30), and Gladstone (81) rounded out the top three teams. Isabelle McCord (22:24.38) and Stephanie Jones (23:00.52) were in the top ten, finishing seventh and ninth respectively. Elise Proulx (25:17.72), Eleanor Carey (25:35.95), Isabeau Woodard (27:40.37) and Nicole Perez (28:36.20) rounded out the scoring for the girls.
The JV boys’ team had seven runners make the top ten. Ryan O’Connor (19:45.45), Ian Southwell (19:53.03), McKal Berry (21:07.29), Alex Huyck (21:52.40), Beau Litzner (21:53.23) and Hayden Preston (21:58.03) were the first six to finish their race. Arlin Alcorn (23:22.60) rounded out the top ten.
The JV girls’ team had four of their runners in the top ten. Isabella Cicco (27:40.41) was third, River Brey (28:15.16) was sixth, Adelyn Corbiere 28:24.26 was seventh and Taylor Meilstrup (28:39.51) finished eighth. Leighton Nyboer (29:47.99), Gianna Sayer (30:02), Chloe Brow (31:48.86), and Savannah Proulx (32:05.09) completed the JV roster.
Head Coach Jim Martin was very happy about the teams’ combined efforts. “The boys varsity ran a really nice “pack” race to win going away. Girls were runner up against a tough South Lyon squad. Both varsity teams ran well. It was a total team effort for both varsity teams. JV boys team dominated their portion of the meet while Izzy Cicco had a PR while leading the JV girls to a runner up finish.”
