Saturday, the Blue Devils hosted a double header against strong JV and Varsity teams from Cedar Springs, which is just north of Grand Rapids. The second to last home game for Varsity, it was a chance to recognize the team’s seniors, along with their parents. Ezra Beach, Cale Bell, Evan Kennedy, Evan Shunk, Max VanDoren, Calvin Aldrich, Jesse Justice-Beck, Sawyer Kuenzer, Kaden Blair, Owen Rice, Josh Gurnoe, Jacob Gurnoe and Avery Jackson were recognized prior to the start of the game. Though the game did not end in the Sault’s favor, Head Coach Scott Menard praised the Seniors. “The seniors have really been great this year, in spite of our record. They have been strong leaders and good role models for the younger players.”
A number of Blue Devils had solid performances Saturday afternoon. On offense, Tristan Walcher had 7 rushes for 36 yards, and Cale Bell had 10 rushes for 30 yards. Brylin Van Elswyk was 11 for 20 for 114 yards and 2 interceptions. He also threw a 2 point conversion to Walcher. Ezra Beach had 3 catches for 40 yards. Senior Evan Kennedy had 3 catches for 37 yds. Evan Shunk had 2 for 20 yards. Walcher was 3 for 17, and caught the 2 point conversion from VanElswyk.
On defense, Bell had 8 tackles, 2 passes defended, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery for a 40-yard touchdown run. Wyatt Peabody had 8 tackles, and 1 fumble recovery. Sam Kiekhaefer and Mark DeWildt had 5 tackles each. Mike Morse had 2 tackles and forced a fumble.
Jacob Gurnoe punted well, averaging 44 yards a kick.
This coming week is Homecoming Week, and a busy one for Sault High Sports. Monday Girls Volleyball is at Home, Tuesday is Powderpuff Football, and Thursday JV Football will head to Alpena. Friday is the Homecoming parade, followed by the Varsity Football game. Saturday cross country is at Rudyard, and Boys Soccer is at Gaylord.
