Blue Devil Wrestling Returns

The Sault High Blue Devils wrestling team, with Head Coach Jacinto Arreola and Assistant Coach Matt Vieira, are ready to keep rolling with the momentum it has gained over the past three years. Despite graduating two key wrestlers and team captains last year, the majority of the team from last season has returned to the mat. Team Captains seniors Cody Russo (fourth year captain) and Sawyer Kuenzer (first year captain) have stepped up and taken this role in leading the team on and off the mat. A few new athletes have joined the team this year: Dane Armentrout, Hazen Hudson, Ayla Menard, Isaac Peabody and Chris Young. With 14 weight classes to fill, Coach Arreola noted the roster is in good shape. “Currently as we sit we only have a couple gaps in our lineup but make up with strategically bouncing between weight classes.”

After the disbanding of the Straits Area Conference at the end of the 2023-2024 school year, the schedule this season is a bit different compared to years prior. The team is considered “independent”, as it won’t officially be part of the Big North Conference until next year. “It was a challenge fill our schedule, mainly midweek competition. Luckily after a few months of calling and emails we were able to fill about 98% of our schedule.”

After some preseason open mat opportunities, a few weeks of official practice, and a scrimmage against Rogers City and Rudyard last week, the Blue Devils will open their season at home on Wednesday at 5:30. “Collectively we’re excited at the growth our team has made in the last year. Looking forward to seeing our team compete and make some noise this season.”
