Blue Devils Improve to 3-1

The Sault High Varsity wrestling team traveled to Manistique Wednesday evening for a pair of duals against the host, and Powers North Central. The Emeralds were up first, and senior Max VanDoren (132) was paired up against Aiden Osterhout. Osterhout won the match with a pin (2:33) putting Manistique on the board first. The Sault quickly recovered with a trio of first period pins. Junior Wyatt Peabody (138) pinned Carson Nelson (0:39), Junior Caleb Klier (144) pinned Kaylynn Johnson (0:43) and senior Brett Siesel (157) pinned Jeffery Lampin (0:44), making the score Sault 18; Manistique 6. The teams then split a pair of void with sophomore Sam Kiekhaefer (165) taking the void, and Manistique claimed the 175 weight class. Junior Marc DeWildt (190) beat Griffin Maline by points (2-1). Senior Cody Russo (215) pinned Gavin Ziminski (1:53) taking the score to Blue Devils 33; Emeralds 12. Senior Sawyer Kuenzer (285) won by void, as did freshman Isaac Peabody (106), and the Sault gave up a void in the 113 weight class, making the score now Sault 45; Manistique 18. The last match of the dual was between freshman Hazen Hudson (120) and John Weber. Weber won by technical fall (18-3), and Manistique got the void in the 126 class. The final score was Sault 45; Manistique 29.

Next up for the Blue Devils was Powers North Central. VanDoren (138) was pinned by Kyler Labonte (1:50). The Blue Devils took the next five weight classes by void, catapulting the score to Blue Devils 30; Jets 6. Russo (215) pinned Myles Nehring (1:30), followed by two more Blue Devils wins by void. PNC took the void in the 113 class, and Hudson had a match against Maddy Corrigan where Corrigan came out with a win by points (10-3). The Jets claimed the last two weight classes by void, but it wasn’t enough to take the lead. The final score was Sault 48; Powers North Central 28.

Head Coach Cinto Arreola commented on the team’s wins. “Last night, our team delivered a strong performance and showed great promise as we gear up for this Saturday’s Bridge Brawl @Home. While there were a few minor hiccups we’re actively working to address them to ensure we’re at our best for the event. With a few adjustments, we’re confident in an exciting and competitive showing this weekend. We look forward to seeing the community come out and support us at our home gym!”

The Bridge Brawl puts teams from the Upper Peninsula against teams from the Lower Peninsula in dual style battle, and starts at 9:00am.
