Blue Devils Split Duals

Wednesday night the Sault High wrestling team traveled to Traverse City for their first team dual competition of the season. Match ups from both teams in each weight class determine which team will come out on top at the end. The Blue Devils’ first dual was against the host, the Trojans. Max VanDoren (132) put the Blue Devils on the scoreboard first when he pinned Trey Barnes (3:32). TCC countered when Jack Domback beat Wyatt Peabody (138) by points (TF 17-1). Caleb Klier (144) added some cushion to the score after a win by decision over Reece Schulz (6-4). Silas Lalonde beat Brett Siesel (150) by points (7-3), making the score Blue Devils 9; Trojans 8. A void in the 157 weight class, a Trojan pin by Sage Miller (1:49) over Sam Kiekhaefer (165) and another Blue Devils void at 175 gave the Trojans a 26-9 lead at the halfway point of the dual. Marc DeWildt (190) led the rally with a win by major decision over Hunter Vance (10-0), Cody Russo (215) followed with a first period pin over Titus Allen (1:42), and Sawyer Kuenzer followed suit with another first period pin over Johnny Ferguson (1:21) to bring the score back up to 25-26. Isaac Peabody (106) was pinned by RJ Salsbury (2;41) and Ayla Menard (113) was pinned by Calum Porath (1:12). Hazen Hudson put the final Blue Devil points up with a win by decision over Devine Orns (16-10). The final match in the dual paired Chase Tracey (126) with Clark Gustafson. A battle to the end, Gustafson won by points (13-11). The final score was Blue Devils 28; Trojans 41.

The second dual of the night paired the Sault with Cadillac. Peabody (138) started things off right by pinning Ethan Kellogg (3:40), and Klier (144) followed with a pin over Drayden Beehler (3:59). Siesel (157) won by a void, making the score 18-0. Davin Shivley pinned Kiekhaefer (165, 3:42). The Sault rallied, taking the next six weight classes. DeWildt (190) pinned Nathan Aldrich (1:32), Russo (215) won by void, Kuenzer (285) pinned Henry Harman (3:51), Peabody (106) won by void, Menard (113) won by void, and Hudson (120) quickly pinned Faith Mattzela (0:36). Jackson Romano beat Tracey (126) by major decision (13-2). VanDoren (132) finished the dual by pinning Noah Rollo. The final score was Blue Devils 60; Vikings 10.

Head Coach Jacinto Arreola was pleased with the first pair of duals. “Our team performed well at TCC and fought hard. I believe that this performance is one that will help us build some confidence as we approach some tougher competition in the upcoming weeks. We’re excited with the progress that some of our younger guys have made and believe that it bodes well for not only this year but seasons to come as well.”
