Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. – Proverbs 3:5 (NIV)
I was reading my Bible the other night. I wasn’t reading anything in particular; I was just going through, seeing what I had written previously in the margins and what was underlined. As I was flipping through the pages, my eye caught something I had written on one of the blank pages in the back. It said, “Remember when you’re going through something hard and you wonder where God is, remember teachers never talk during a test.” I don’t know where I originally saw that quote or who had written it, but I thought it was worth remembering.
I read it over a couple of times. It says so much and gives a person something to think about. It’s easy to write off God when things don’t go our way. It’s easy to forget Him and it’s easy to question Him. I am reminded of the scripture in James 1:2-4 (NIV) “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” Yes, we are tested. If we put our faith in God, we need to trust Him, not some of the time, but all the time. That’s what faith is. Hebrews 11:1 (NIV) says, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
I like to think of Him as having my back. No matter what I am going through, I know He has my best interest at heart. Recently, I have been reminded of that time and time again. I try my hardest, to remember He is always with me, but it never hurts to be reminded. We must remind ourselves daily of what He says and what is expected of us. Until we do that, we will question if He is there; He is. He may not answer the way we expect Him to, but He is there and sees the greater good.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, Sometimes sorrow and joy can show up at the same time in a person’s life. When that happens it’s easy to question God when things aren’t as we may like them. Help us accept the things that we cannot change, guide us in our walk with You, and help us to remember to not only share our burdens and insecurities with You but to show gratitude in all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
