Eagles rally for OT win over Beavers

BLIND RIVER, Ont. – A Lucas Caulfield goal, five and a half minutes into overtime, completed the comeback as the Soo Eagles rallied to upend the Blind River Beavers 4-3 Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League get together at the Blind River Community Centre.

Owen King’s team-leading 17th goal of the season started the Beavers off offensively as he side-stepped an Eagles defender and ripped a shot from the left circle past starter Jace Knoerle.

Still 1-0 Blind River into the second period, they chased down a dump-in early in the session which led to Levi Lux sending a cross-ice pass to Kalyn McQueen, who quickly whipped it upstairs for his fifth of the campaign.

Scoring for a fourth straight game, Benjamin Pouliot put Sault Ste. Marie on the board at 14:35 as he came out from behind the net and stuffed in a rebound off his own initial chance past the Beavers’ Bronx Bodnar.

Trading tallies early in the third, Alex Povorozniouk drew the Eagles level at 2:17 as he spun at the top of the crease and jammed in a chance, only to see King click once more with a nice move around a defender and wiring one into the top right-hand corner.

Battling back to force extra time, Gabriel Fisher zipped a short-side shot by Bodnar during a late man advantage and with the Soo’s netminder on the bench for an additional skater.

In OT, the Soo completed their rally when Pouliot chipped a play between two defenders, then went in and fired a shot that was stopped, but Caulfield was right there to snap in the game-winner and end it.

The win helps the Eagles move to 17-6-0-2 in the standings, while with a point in defeat, the Beavers slip to 16-9-1-1.
