Fatal Snowmobile Crash in Schoolcraft County

Schoolcraft County, Michigan. A fatal snowmobile crash occurred last night in Schoolcraft
County. On January 17, 2025, at approximately 7:20 PM, Michigan State Police (MSP) from the
Manistique Outpost responded to a snowmobile personal injury crash on the Haywire Grade
Trail near Thunder Lake Road in Inwood Township.

Some of the driver’s group, traveling further behind, arrived at the scene shortly after the crash
and contacted 911 for assistance. The group members began life-saving efforts, including CPR,
prior to MSP and first responders arriving. Troopers, assisted by snowmobilers in the area, were
able to reach the crash site after traveling by snowmobile, approximately 3 miles northwest of
Thunder Lake Road.

Upon arrival, MSP immediately initiated further lifesaving efforts. Inwood Township EMS and
Alger County EMS further assisted at the scene upon their arrival. Despite these efforts, the
driver, a 46-year-old woman from Dodgeville, Wisconsin, succumbed to her injuries and was
pronounced deceased by medical personnel.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver was traveling southbound on the Haywire
Grade Trail when she failed to navigate a curve, causing the snowmobile to strike multiple trees.
Alcohol or drug use is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

“We offer our condolences to the family, friends, and all those who knew the victim,” said Lt.
Eckola, Michigan State Police Eighth District Public Information Officer. “We would like to thank
our troopers, EMS personnel, and all first responders for their efforts, as well as the
snowmobilers who assisted in transporting MSP to the crash location and those who provided
lifesaving efforts before the arrival of troopers and EMS.”
