Gold Miners surprise Eagles

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – A three-point night from Trent Nobes propelled the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners to a 4-2 road victory over the Soo Eagles in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest Saturday at Pullar Stadium.

Kirkland Lake began the scoring nearly six and a half minutes into the first period after winning a draw that led to Alexander Sackett pumping in a rebound off a Nobes shot past Sault Ste. Marie’s Jace Knoerle.

Pulling even in the latter stages of the frame, Alex Povorozniouk notched his 20th goal of the season as he knocked in a rebound off a Liam Watson attempt from up high, just as a power play they were on had expired.

The tally gives Povorozniouk points in 14 straight contests.

Still tied into the middle stanza, the Gold Miners retook the lead during a power play when Nobes was spotted coming in the back door and buried a crisp cross-ice pass from down low and wired it past Knoerle.

Back and forth they went as the Eagles knotted the affair when a surging Cooper Fredericks fired one through Janicki from the high slot to extend a consecutive game point streak to 13.

Taking 3-2 lead into the second intermission, Kirkland Lake’s Jordan Fitger redirected in a one-time blast from up high by Dawson Boily, during a man advantage.

In the third, Nobes iced the road victory as he darted in alone and wrapped up the scoring into an empty net late in regulation.

The win for the Gold Miners was their first since back on November 1 when they 3-2 at French River.
