He is Everywhere

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” – Proverbs 3:5 (NIV)

It was late last summer, in the middle of the night, when I saw light flashes and a halo around a night light. I had just had eye surgery about 6-8 weeks prior, and I was worried that my retina was detaching. When morning came I called the eye doctor’s office. They told me to come in right away. As I was in the examining room going through my medical history with the assistant, I burst into tears. I was overloaded. I couldn’t understand why my body was rebelling. It seemed like I was constantly going through some medical issue, one crisis after another, and I was worn down and out. I felt so alone.

Caroline, the young woman taking my medical information reached out to me. I could tell she was a Christian. She turned away from the laptop and started talking about God, life, and all the perils, that are sometimes thrown at us. Before I knew it I was smiling and felt I could handle whatever the doctor was about to tell me.

She left the room briefly and when she came back, she had a tiny Jesus doll in her hand. She told me it was for me to keep, that she felt I needed Him close by that day. More tears came because of her goodness and compassion. “He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully.” – Luke 4:10 (NIV) I found out later that she didn’t normally work at that office, but at another office an hour away. I felt strongly God had his hand in mine that day, sending Caroline, whom I had never met, to help me through a difficult morning.

As it turned out my retina wasn’t detaching, it was another issue, but I was reminded that day that there are still good people willing to help others. As she left the room she gave me her home phone number in case I ever needed to talk. I have never talked to or seen her since, but I am reminded of her often because I keep that little Jesus doll in my wallet’s change purse. Every time I need change that little doll comes out with the quarters and pennies. And when I was recently hospitalized, I took that little Jesus doll out of my wallet and held Him close. I know God gave me a gift that day, reminding me that a person never knows when they may meet one of His angels.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I am in awe of You. Your grace, compassion, and love are amazing. It’s a testament to You when we experience love shown by others. Continue to empower us with Your strength when feeling hopeless, and continue to use others to help us in our time of need.  Amen.
