SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men’s basketball team (11-2, 2-1 GLIAC) fended off the Wayne State Warriors (5-6, 1-2 GLIAC) by a final score of 75-71 on Thursday.
Tyson Edmondson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) found Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) inside for a layup to open up the scoring for the Lakers, and three three-pointers from Edmondson in the first six minutes of the game had LSSU leading 16-5. Adam Harakow (Edmonton, Alta.) would then get involved, using a trip to the free throw line and a three ball to extend the lead to 14 points. Both teams would battle for the remainder of the opening half, but a pair of threes from Hunter Soper (Lexington, Mich.) had the Lakers ahead 39-24 going into the break.
To start the second half, Perkins would once again open up the scoring with a bucket down low as both teams traded blows. The Lakers were able to extend their lead with a 7-0 run as a jumper from Harakow extended the LSSU advantage to 19 points, their largest lead of the game. However, the Warriors managed to grind their way back into the game, trimming the lead down to five with just under seven minutes to play, but Devin Womack (Ypsilanti, Mich.) was able to settle the Lakers down and hold Wayne State at bay, first finding Perkins inside before pulling up for a deep three late in the shot clock to push the lead back out to nine. The Warriors were able to close within two with 12 seconds remaining, but Womack iced the game away at the free throw line to secure the victory.
Five Lakers finished the night in double-figures, led by Soper with 18 points. Joining him in double-digits was Perkins (12), Harakow (12), Edmondson (11), and Womack (10) with both Soper and Perkins also securing a game-high 8 rebounds each.
The Lakers return to action when they face the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals on Saturday, Jan. 4 with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m.
