Laker Men’s Basketball Top Bulldogs in Top-15 Showdown

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The No. 11 Lake Superior State (LSSU) Lakers (18-3, 9-2 GLIAC) avenged their December loss earlier this season with a 73-64 victory over the No. 15 Ferris State Bulldogs (18-4, 8-3 GLIAC) in front of a packed crowd in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium on Thursday.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but the Lakers battled back with a three from Nino-Carter Smith (Detroit, Mich.) before Kingsley Perkins (Ypsilanti, Mich.) jumped the passing lane on his way to an emphatic dunk in transition to ignite the crowd. However, despite a three from Adam Harakow (Edmonton, Alta.) helping to give the Lakers a nine-point lead, Ferris State fought back to take a slim 36-35 lead going into the halftime break.

Ferris State managed to extend their lead to six points to open the second half, but the Lakers quickly erased it with threes from Hunter Soper (Lexington, Mich.) and Devin Womack (Ypsilanti, Mich.). Tyson Edmondson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) would then heat up with a pair of threes of his own, eclipsing the 1,000-point milestone for his career in the process, and the Laker fans were feeling it after a dunk from Harakow followed by Harakow lobbing it up for an alley-oop to Edmondson in transition. The Lakers would then extend their lead to double-digits, seizing all of the momentum. The Bulldogs were not ready to give up, applying pressure and cutting the lead back down to four, but a clutch three from Edmondson held them at bay as the Lakers secured a massive GLIAC victory in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

Harakow led all players in scoring with 18 points off the bench, and Edmondson was not far behind with 17 points of his own. Meanwhile, Perkins also finished in double figures with 12 points while also securing 8 rebounds.

The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 1 when they host Roosevelt with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m.
