OTSEGO COUNTY, MI. The start of a new year brings something new to the Michigan State Police
(MSP) in northern Michigan, the formation of the MSP Seventh District Cold Case Team, which will
operate out of the district headquarters located in Gaylord within the Special Investigation Section. The
purpose of this new team is to review, organize, and maintain the MSP Seventh District cold cases and
associated property as well as further the investigations.
The team will be led by Detective Sergeant Matt Wilt and will include two detective troopers who have yet to be assigned. The team will evaluate the MSP cold cases in northern Michigan and determine their solvability based on a metrics system.
With the advancement of DNA analysis and other investigative techniques we want to take a fresh look at some of our older cases. We want the public and the families to know we have not forgotten about them. There is no statute of limitations for homicide so if we can further the investigations and get suspects charged, we hope to bring closure to the families of the victim.
