A Message from Cloverland’s CEO, Mike Heise, Regarding Hydro Plant Tailrace Fishing

The Eastern Upper Peninsula (EUP) fishing community has expressed concerns regarding fishing opportunities behind the hydro plant in Sault Ste Marie. Cloverland recognizes fishing the north side of the hydro plant turbines has been utilized for many years. Concerns expressed by the fishing community are premature. As a member-owned cooperative, Cloverland values input from its members. However, it’s important for the facts to be clearly represented.

Current information:

  • As with any electricity utility, regulations change constantly regarding generation requirements in the near term and the longer term; as such, Cloverland continuously seeks the best advice and strategy for its future. Cloverland and its owner-members demand the most reliable, resilient and economically friendly electricity possible.
  • Over the years, Cloverland staff and management have sought guidance from outside experts on the continued use and viability of our 123-year-old hydro plant. The importance of the hydro plant cannot be overstated.
  • Cloverland is preparing a request for proposal (RFP) for an overall review of the hydro plant, which will lead to the selection of a firm tasked to evaluate the facility. As part of the review, the overall infrastructure analysis regarding a four-year strengthening of the canal walls and raceway is included.
  • The hydro plant study, associated with the RFP, is a 360-degree approach to the plant and is expected to be completed later this year. When completed, Cloverland staff will evaluate the results and fully study the recommendations.
  • At this point, no plans are in place to alter fishing behind the hydro plant.
  • Cloverland is aware of its economic role in fostering benefits of all kinds to Sault Ste. Marie and five-county distribution across the Eastern Upper Peninsula.
  • Cloverland’s board of directors and management team understand their responsibility to always make decisions in the best interest of their membership. The cooperative will, therefore, always consider members’ needs as it balances all decisions.
  • Should any recommendation be considered that will impact the community, Cloverland’s member-owners will have the opportunity to voice their concerns prior to any official action.
