Cubs claim regular season title with win over Eagles

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Nolan Newton had a goal and an assist Saturday as part of a 3-1 win by the Greater Sudbury Cubs over the Soo Eagles at Pullar Stadium, which also clinched the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s 2024-25 regular season title for the Cubs.

The last time a Sudbury-based team captured a NOJHL seasonal crown was back during the 2005-06 campaign, when the then Sudbury Northern Wolves accomplished the feat.

Greater Sudbury needed just a minute to commence the scoring when an attempted Sault Ste. Marie clearing play along the side boards, instead found the stick of Daks Klinkhammer, who snagged the puck and fired it past netminder Mason Burkes, from the top of the right circle.

Staying 1-0 Cubs into the second period, some solid work by Newton generated another marker for the visitors as he battled to gain possession and put an attempt to the target that was handled by Burkes, but Noah Kohan was right there to slam in the rebound at 18:04.

A late skirmish saw Greater Sudbury goaltender Karsen Chartier ejected from the contest, which resulted in back-up Noah Beaulne entering in relief.

Another impressive effort from Newton saw him strike shorthanded, just over three minutes into the third, as Lucas Signoretti sent him up-ice where he muscled his way around a defender, then buried his 19th tally of the year.

The assist for Signoretti sees him extend a point streak to six in succession.

The Eagles got one back at 8:54 as Zach Sweitzer led a rush and worked a feed over to Cooper Fredericks, who ripped in his team-leading 31st tally, while scoring in a third-straight outing, in beating Beaulne.

However, that’s as close as the home side would get as the Cubs finished off the outcome and secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming NOJHL playoffs.
