Hearst Tackles the Soo 4-2

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Getting goals from a trio of defencemen, the Hearst Lumberjacks used that back-end support to defeat the Soo Eagles 4-2 Friday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest at Pullar Stadium.

An evenly played first period was scoreless as the two teams went to their respective dressing rooms for the initial intermission still knotted at 0-0.

Hearst eventually broke the deadlock three and a half minutes into the middle frame as a strong forecheck led to Liam Boswell putting a feed in the slot that was collected by Brayden Hindman, who lifted a backhand by Sault Ste. Marie’s Jace Knoerle.

Answering with an equalizer a couple of shifts later, Cooper Fredericks found Evan Hoglund on the right side where he ripped a shot upstairs on Lumberjacks’ netminder Alexandre Boivin, for his first NOJHL tally.

The assist for Fredericks gives him points in six straight outings.

Not done there, Hoglund scored again as he cranked in a one-timer, moments after laying out a big hit on a Hearst skater.

Matching that at 8:23, Lumberjacks’ captain Adam Shillinglaw took a cross-ice feed from Aiden Kalin and wired it high on Knoerle.

Continuing to trade markers, the visitors regained the lead after blueliner Jean-Pierre Audras deposited a sizzler from the left circle for his fifth of the campaign.

Despite a lengthy man advantage for the Soo in the final frame, the score stayed 3-2 Hearst late into regulation, before Lumberjacks’ forward Ty McKay collected a loose puck in the neutral zone and put it into the empty net to wrap-up the road result.

Both squads return to the ice Saturday with Hearst visiting Blind River and the Soo entertaining Timmins in a pair of 7 p.m. starts.
