The Sault High Varsity Wrestling team wrapped up their season, with a number of wrestlers receiving awards. Juniors and Seniors with a GPA of 3.5 or higher were again recognized for being named to the Academic All UP Team. Seniors Calvin Aldrich, Brett Siesel and Max VanDoren made the team for the second year in a row. Juniors Marc DeWildt, Caleb Klier and Jonah Rishmawi joined this elite group of athletes from across the Upper Peninsula.
Freshman Hazen Hudson (113) was awarded the Best First Year Wrestler award for having the most wins and scoring the most team points out of the first year wrestlers this season. Junior Marc DeWildt (175/190) received the Sportsmanship Award for his accomplishments and character displayed both on and off the mat. Senior Calvin Aldrich (215) was presented the Coaches Award for his leadership and dedication to the team and sport this season. Junior Caleb Klier (144) received the Most Improved Wrestler Award for the incredible progress he has made since starting the sport just two years ago. Senior Sawyer Kuenzer (275) received the Most Valuable Player Award to celebrate his outstanding season, including earning all-state status at the MHSAA Individual Finals last month. It should be noted that Kuenzer will be continuing his wrestling career, having just signed with Rochester Christian University. Senior Cody Russo (215) was given the Ralph Sarnowski Award for his leadership, multiple achievements and dedication to the program over his high school career.
Head Coach Jacinto Arreola and Assistant Coach Matt Vieira praised the athletes’ hard work and accomplishments throughout the season. There will be a two-day wrestling camp at Sault High this summer for wrestlers 6-12 grade. For more information, email Saultyouthwrestling@gmail.com.
