FREE Household Hazardous Waste Collection and Tire Recycling

The Chippewa Luce Mackinac Conservation District is proud to be partnered with Bay Mills Indian
Community and the Environmental Protection Agency to bring you free Household Hazardous Waste
Collection and Scrap Tire Recycling!

What is hazardous waste?
Hazardous products are those that are dangerous or pose environmental and/or human health risk.
Often, hazardous products have words like “danger”, “warning”, “toxic”, “flammable”, etc. on their
label. Hazardous waste may be more common in your house than you think. Do you have old batteries
lying around? What about old bottles of cleaners, bug spray, or medications? Other examples of
household hazardous waste include pesticides/herbicides, motor oil, antifreeze, nail polish/nail polish
remover, wood stripper, etc. Household hazardous waste can be a huge hassle to get rid of as pouring it down the drain or throwing it in your trash bin can pollute the environment or harm a person or animal.

What about tires?
Tires are also considered hazardous waste. Not only are tires a fire risk, but they can also collect water
and act as a breeding site for mosquitoes! Fortunately, scrap tires can be recycled!

What should I do with hazardous waste?
Hazardous waste should be disposed of properly. Tires can often be brought to a tire shop for recycling.

The availability and cost of this service is dependent on the tire shops around you. Household hazardous waste can be more challenging as collection sites can be few and far between.

CLMCD is proud to reduce these challenges by temporarily providing this service for free for residents of Chippewa, Luce, and Mackinac counties!

How to participate!

Tires
Tire recycling is currently active and will be available until July 31. 2025 or until funding runs out. To

Household Hazardous Waste
Household Hazardous Waste will be collected through drive-up events during the spring and summer. To utilize these events, you will need to register for a date and time slot. Registration can be done online at www.baymills.org/wastecollections, by phone, or in person at the conservation district. We are also encouraging farmers to have Megan Bertucci from the conservation district visit prior to the collection event to have an inventory of your hazardous waste done. This will aid our waste collectors in planning for the materials and quantities coming in.

There are currently four events planned throughout the EUP. The dates and cities are listed below. If
funding allows, there may be more events in September. Early registration is open for tribe members
starting April 1 st . The registration will open for farmers on May 1 st , 2025, and the general community on May 7 th , 2025.
