LANSING, Mich. – Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, in accordance with a proclamation issued by President Trump, has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex and across all public buildings and grounds to be lowered to half-staff immediately on Tuesday, April 22, until sunset on the day of interment to honor and remember Pope Francis.
“Pope Francis was an inspiration to countless Michiganders and people around the world. He led with grace, compassion, and humility,” said Governor Whitmer. “He fought against poverty and called for action on climate change, economic injustice, and peace. He reminded us that the true measure of one’s devotion to God comes in one’s devotion to others. Pope Francis was a leader who called on all of us to live up to our better selves. As we celebrate his life and mourn his death, let us live by the values he believed in—love, mercy, and compassion for all.”
Pope Francis was the first pope from the Society of Jesus (the Jesuit Order) and the first of Latin American identity. As leader of the Catholic Church for over a decade, Pope Francis defined his papacy with humility and compassion. His legacy as a remarkable leader and unwavering champion of marginalized communities will be remembered by many.
The State of Michigan, pursuant to and in accordance with the president’s directive, will lower flags to half-staff in recognition of the pope’s lifetime of service. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments, and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.
To lower flags to half-staff, flags should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The process is reversed before the flag is lowered for the day.
Flags should be returned to full staff on Sunday, April 27, 2025.
