The E.U.P. Indivisible Chapter and friends came together in the Sault on Saturday for a Bridging Our Friendship rally.
The rally was in conjunction with rallies held in Detroit near the Ambassador Bridge and Port Huron near the Blue Water Bridge to demonstrate solidarity with Canadians in light of ongoing tariff wars.
It started at the Market Corner on Ashmun Street.
“We ended up with 350 people here,” said Linda Prisk, of E.U.P. Indivisible Chapter. “They came in from all across the U.P. and in the Lower Peninsula.”
Prisk credited Yoopers Unite and Lake Superior Region Indivisible for originating the idea of holding rallies near international bridges to show support for Canadians.
“We kind of hooked onto it,” she said. “It was all about us coming together. It was nice to have this, Bridging Our Friendship.”
After gathering at the Market Corner, ralliers walked down the boardwalk to enjoy some music and food.
Meanwhile, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, an Elbows Up rally took place at the same time.
The non-partisan event was part of a larger Canadian initiative, and it featured family activities, food, a beer tent, and local performers.
Sault, Ontario, Mayor Matthew Shoemaker spoke at the rally.
He went out of his way to acknowledge the pre-existing ties between the twin Saults, at one point quoting a letter penned by Sault Michigan Mayor Don Gerrie in support of Saturday’s Elbows Up rally.
“There are very few communities across both great countries that have such a close and productive continuing relationship. So clearly, the friction between our two nations is not something that people in the U.S. are clamouring for, as Don’s letter shows,” Shoemaker said, after reading an excerpt from Gerrie’s letter.
“We have friends and neighbours across the river.”
Organizers called the event a show of Canadian pride and a response to perceived threats to Canadian sovereignty.
Prisk said E.U.P. Indivisible will continue spreading its message at a MayDay Strong rally planned for Thursday, May 1.
