Michael Onuskanich, age 90, of Cedarville, Michigan, died on July 10, 2022, at his home surrounded by family. He was born on November 13, 1931, in Frackville, Pennsylvania, to John and Mary (Dzedzik) Onuskanich.
Mike grew up in Pennsylvania and graduated high school with the class of 1948. His mother moved the family to Detroit, Michigan, shortly after his father died. After High School, he joined the United States Navy and served in Korea. Mike returned to Michigan and began working for Detroit Edison in the powerhouse.
He also worked powerline tree trimming for Detroit Edison before getting his Lineman apprenticeship. His Navy buddy from Cedarville, Gene Baker, introduced Mike to Eleanor D. Beach and they married on January 22, 1956, in Detroit. They raised four children while Mike worked forty years with Detroit Edison. Mike retired in 1996 and they moved to Cedarville permanently to enjoy their retirement.
Mike loved driving down old logging roads in the state forests looking for downed trees that he could cut-up for firewood—stocking up was always good. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and his vegetable garden. Mike also liked scouting and picking wild blueberries. He never had enough blueberries and would buy another chest freezer if necessary. Mike enjoyed playing the stock market and did remarkably well for being self-taught.
Mike is survived by his sons, Stephen Onuskanich of North Branch, Michigan, Mark (Cheryl) Onuskanich of Waterford, Michigan, Dana Oniskanich of North Branch, Michigan; daughter, Dru Onuskanich of Caro, Michigan; grandchildren, Heather Onuskanich, Jennifer Onuskanich, Vicki Onuskanich, Samantha (Clayton) Raska, Thomas Onuskanich, and Jerry Spencer; great-grandchild, Breeze Richardson; brother-in-law, Richard Thomas of Blanchard, Michigan; sisters-in-law, Corine Onuskanich of Novi, Michigan and Meredith Fountain of Cedarville.
