UPDATE: Deputy US Marshall shot in Stalwart; Shooter dead

UPDATE:

CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI — The U.S. Marshals have confirmed a shooting took place Wednesday that left one person hospitalized and that a suspect wanted by police for child abduction is dead. US Marshalls identified the suspect as Giovanni McNab, who was wanted in Missouri for abduction and parental kidnapping.

U.S. Marshals confirmed that McNab died following a confrontation with law enforcement, but did not release details on how he died.

The ordeal began Wednesday when a special operations group established a perimeter around a residence where McNab was believed to be. While the perimeter was set up, McNab allegedly exited the home and fired several shots at the Marshals, striking a Deputy Marshall who was trying to rescue two children inside. That Deputy was listed in stable condition, according to the U.S. Marshals.

Details remain limited, but law enforcement was eventually able to rescue the two children believed to have been with McNab and a woman who was with him was taken into custody.

As the situation unfolded Wednesday, a large police presence was seen in the eastern portion of the Upper Peninsula, near the areas of Goetzville, Pickford and Stalwart. A police presence was also noticeable at the Mackinac Bridge earlier in the day.

There is no threat to the community according to the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office.
