Obituary For Audrey Ann Gillett

Audrey Ann Gillett, age 95, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died on July 26, 2024, at MyMichigan Medical Center Sault. She was born on March 12, 1929, to Charles J. and Frances B. (Malkowski) Galarowic.

Audrey grew up in Cedarville, Michigan and graduated from Cedarville High School. She then attended Central Michigan University and met Jesse. Upon completing college, they married on September 13, 1952 and settled in Sault Ste. Marie. They started their family and Audrey had the privilege of being home to care for them in many ways.

Audrey belonged to many organizations such as the War Memorial Hospital Auxillary, United Way, Red Hat Society, Women’s Bowling Assn, and was a Gazelle. She was also a Boy Scout Den Mother and in a sewing club (crocheting and knitting hats, mittens and sweaters for her children, grandchildren and others). She was an active member of the Central United Methodist Church.

She loved to travel and has been to many places including Poland, France, Italy, Scotland, England, Greece, Germany, Austria and in 2005 took all of her children on an Alaskan cruise. She also wanted to visit all of the states in the U.S. and was short of her goal by just a few of them.

Audrey was a wonderful cook. She worked on the 1987 Bowling Assn. cookbook and many of her handwritten recipes are included in a family cookbook that her daughter recently created.
She hosted family holiday dinners until she was 90 years old. Audrey also enjoyed having coffee at local restaurants with friends.

Audrey is survived by her children, James (Mila) Gillett of Sault Ste. Marie, Cynthia Gillett of Sault Ste. Marie, Tim (Jinny) Gillett of Sault Ste. Marie and Jacquelyn (Jen Bartrum) Swanson of Commerce Twp, Michigan; grandchildren, Tina (Sean Crooks) Aguin, Andrea Masters, Ryan (Ashley) Kabke, Raymond (Britnee) Gillett, Charlie (Christina) Gillett, Tom Detrich and Matt (Sarah) Detrich; great-grandchildren, Mateo Aguin, Camden Crooks, Connor Crooks, Elena Masters, Callie Masters, Leah Kabke, Brielle Kabke, Raynee Gillett, Kinlee Gillett, Emmett Gillett and Everett Gillett.

Audrey was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Gillett; parents, Charles and Frances Galarowic; sisters, Rhoda (Edwin) Smith and Suzanne (Leroy) Harrison.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 111 E. Spruce St., Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

A private graveside burial service was held. A Celebration of Life luncheon for family and friends will be held at the Central United Methodist Church on Saturday, September 7, at 11:00 a.m.

Audrey’s final resting place will be at the Oaklawn Chapel Gardens.
