Obituaries

John “Johnny” David Smith, age 67, passed on May 31, 2024. Johnny was born in St. Ignace on March 17, 1957, to Terry and Sharon (Erskine) Smith of Evergreen Shores, and he was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

Johnny grew up in Evergreen Shores and went to school there before graduating from LaSalle High School, where he played football and baseball. He bought his great grandfather’s (Cecil Smith) house after high school and lived there on the hill all his adult life. He was a gifted carpenter and worked for various construction companies and Kewadin Shores Casino for many years.

Johnny loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed being in the woods, tinkering in his garage, riding his 4-wheeler, spending time out at camp, and tending a roaring bonfire surrounded by family and friends. He had an infectious laugh and sense of humor.

Johnny is survived by his daughter, Nickie (Nate) Stenson, and son, Jake Smith; grandchildren, Lily and Curtis Stenson; mother, Sharon Smith; sisters, Terri Lyn Fitzpatrick and Tammy (Roger) Stascak, and brother, Clark (Roxanne) Smith; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Johnny was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Roxanna Massaway this past February; father, Terry Smith; brother, Elvin Smith III; and in-laws, Nan and Jim Massaway.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Johnny and Roxanna on July 20, 2024.
