Obituaries

Mary Ellen Stephenson, age 93, died in her home on Thursday, September 12, 2024, in Rexton, Michigan. She was born March 21, 1931, to Harry and Mary (Horst) Sommers on a farm in Orrville, Ohio.

Mary Ellen came to the U.P. in 1950 as a missionary worker. She lived in the area most of her life and considered this to be her true home. Mary was most likely to be found with a book, gardening tool, or quilt in her hands. Her artistic skills in her paintings and chalk drawings were enjoyed by many in the community over the years. Her favorite past time was riding dune buggies. She was always the first one on when the motors fired up and in the lead buggy with her son-in-law Mike on every ride. She was an active member of her church along with serving other committees in the area. Her family and friends will forever miss their “Sunshine Lady”.

Mary Ellen is survived by her daughters, Mary Cook, Cathi (Michael) Kolomitz; sons, Tim (Connie) Stephenson, Harry (Cheryl) Stephenson, and Jr (Cindy) Stephenson; daughter-in-law, Janet Stephenson; grandchildren; Jennifer, Eric, Jason D. Jason S. Amber, Dennis, Brandy, Jenna, Kayla, Michael, Sophia, Tilley; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and twelve great great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Bixler; brother, Dale Sommers.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by sons, Daniel, Henry, and Jeremy Stephenson; parents, Harry and Mary Sommers; and one sister and four brothers.

A graveside service will be held on September 20, 2024, at 11:30 AM at Caffey Cemetery, in Rexton, Michigan with a luncheon to follow at the Hendricks Township Fire Hall.
