Obituary For Michael Richard Sweeney
Michael Richard Sweeney, age 79, of Cedarville, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on
February 22, 2024. Born in Sault Ste. Marie on January 14, 1945, to Edna (Harrison) and
Richard Sweeney.
Mike graduated from Pickford High School with the class of 1964 and was a member of the
Holy Family Catholic Church in Barbeau, Michigan, and later attended First Union Church of
Cedarville.
Mike retired from US Steel - Cedarville Limestone Quarry in 2007. He also co-owned Lordson
& Sweeney excavating early in his career for several years before becoming a member of
Operating Engineer Local 324 as a heavy equipment operator.
Mike enjoyed boating, golfing, hunting, and snowmobiling. He raced in the I-500 and placed in
the top 10 several times. Later his passion was spending time with his grandchildren and
watching their sporting events with his fondest memory watching Jordan win the first Basketball
State Championship for Cedarville.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife and high school sweetheart of 58 years, whom he married
in Barbeau in 1965 at the Holy Family Catholic Church, Marilyn Rae (Hossack) Sweeney; son,
David Michael (Susan) Sweeney; daughter, Kara (Greg) Guertin; grandchildren, Jason
(Courtney) Sweeney, Jordan (Miranda) Sweeney, Ashley Sweeney, Skylar Guertin, Lucas
Guertin, Hossack Sweeney, Carly Yaste (Clay), and Chris Belevender; great-grandson, Maverick
Sweeney; sisters, Connie McConkey, Patricia (Tom) Lamb; and brother, Jack (Lori) Sweeney.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Richard & Edna Sweeney; mother and father-in-law,
Mary Jane and William Hossack; sister, Sharon (Bill) Ryan; nephew, Billy Ryan; brother, James
Sweeney; brother- in-law, Dale McConkey; and sister-in-law, Brenda (Bob) Smith.
A Memorial gathering will be held on Friday March 1, 2024, from 11:00 AM till 12:00 Noon at
Family Life Funeral Homes – Pickford, with a Memorial Service starting at 12:00.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Clark Township Ambulance or Fire Department.
