Obituary For Walter Theodore Brosco

Walter Theodore Brosco, age 81, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, passed away at
Freighterview Assisted Living in Sault, Michigan, on February 9, 2024. He was born on
January 28, 1943, in Sault Ste. Marie, to Adolph R. and Evelyn M. (Porter) Brosco.

Walter grew up in Sault Ste. Marie. He attended St. Joseph's School and graduated from Sault High School with the class of 1961. He married Nancy Talentino in 1962 and they had two children, Cheryl and Steven. He worked at his family’s gas station before starting at the Corps of Engineers in 1963. He earned his Master Captain's License and
was the captain of the Alcona, the Three Lakes, the James M. Bray, and the Owen M.Frederick. He retired in 2010 after 47 years of service.

Walter was the winner of the Corps of Engineers Great Lakes Boater of the year on two occasions. He made lasting friendships while working at the Corp. He built a home for his family from the ground up. He worked in it every evening and weekends for an entire year. He dug the basement,
set the bricks and put up every wall, window and door. In 1974, he purchased a dump truck and began Brosco and Son Trucking as a side job until the early 1980's. He volunteered at the I-500 for 40 years as a Tech Inspector and was also on the Board of Directors.

After retirement, you could find Walter doing engine repairs in his garage. He was a
remarkable mechanic who could fix anything. If you could break it, he could fix it. He did repairs for friends, neighbor and people he didn't know. He did the repairs at no charge and frequently bought the parts himself. Sometimes he would accept a can of WD40 or a package of Pepsi as payment if you insisted. Walter always kept himself busy. He
was never one to sit down and if he did, it was to complete a crossword puzzle. He meticulously manicured his yard, enjoyed hunting and riding and restoring his Harley Davidson motorcycles. .

Walter's biggest joy was his grandchildren. He started a tradition on Saturday mornings with them when they were very young. The grandkids
called it "Papa Day" and at 8:00 a.m. he picked them up and they went to McDonald’s for breakfast and to play in the play place. The next stop was Glen’s for his grocery shopping. Each grandchild got to pick out a snack to take home for later. They went to his house to assist him in putting away the groceries. While they were there, he spun
them in the spinney chair or put them in an old metal boat he had and pulled it behind
his tractor in the field. These memories will be special to his grandchildren for the rest of
their lives. He never missed a School Christmas program, traveled all over to see them
in sporting events. Walter was very proud to see each one grow up and graduate from
High School and College. Their education was very important to him and he contributed
to insure they were financially able to obtain it.

Walter is survived by his daughter, Cheryl (David) Jones of Sault Ste. Marie and his son, Steven (Shelley) Brosco of Sault Ste. Marie; grandchildren, Emily Jacques, Alexa (Brian) Killips, Kali (Tyler) Perron, and Ryan Jones; great-grandchildren, Jackson Jacques, Addyson Jacques, and Carter Perron; brothers, William Brosco, James
Brosco, and Don Brosco; sister, Eva Brosco; and special friend, Frances McCall.
